Almost every home has a bunch of junk that you know shouldn’t be thrown in the regular trash.

I’m talking about things like old batteries, power banks, cables, broken electronics, half-empty paint cans, motor oil, pesticides and household chemicals.

One of the easiest places to start is Best Buy. They accept a surprising amount of old electronics, including computers, phones, printers, cables, chargers, power banks, battery backups and many other devices.

They also accept damaged or swollen batteries which should be handled with care as they can be a fire hazard.

For everything else, here are the local government options:

Arlington County

The Household Hazardous Materials and Electronics Collection Center is located at 565 31st Street South. They accept paint, automotive fluids, pesticides, household chemicals, rechargeable batteries, electronics and more.

Monday through Thursday drop-offs require an appointment. Saturdays are open from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. without an appointment.

City of Falls Church

City residents can use Fairfax County’s I-66 household hazardous waste facility for items such as chemicals, paint, automotive fluids and rechargeable batteries. Falls Church also partners with eAsset Solutions for electronics recycling.

Fairfax County operates two permanent collection sites:

Both locations accept household hazardous waste and electronics, although their operating schedules are different.

Most government collection programs are limited to residents and may require identification. I would also check the website before making the trip because hours and accepted items can change.

Hopefully this helps you finally clear out that drawer or corner filled with things you weren’t sure how to throw away.

Is there anything you’ve been holding onto because you had no idea where to take it?
